How counting works

TypeCount uses a standard Windows keyboard hook that tells it a key was pressed. At that moment it sorts the press into a category (a typing key, an editing key such as Backspace, a navigation key, or a modifier such as Shift), adds one to a counter, and discards everything else about the press. The identity of the key is never written anywhere, so a password typed anywhere is counted exactly like any other typing: as one more number, never as characters. Typing into apps running as administrator, on the lock screen and in Windows security prompts is not seen at all.

Where your data lives

Everything is kept in a small database and a settings file in your Windows user profile. When TypeCount is installed from the Microsoft Store, Windows keeps these inside the app’s own private storage, and they are removed when you uninstall the app. Nothing is synced to any cloud by TypeCount.

Network

TypeCount itself makes no network connections: no analytics, no tracking, no advertising, no crash uploads. Updates are delivered by the Microsoft Store. If you buy TypeCount, the purchase is handled entirely by the Microsoft Store, which is operated by Microsoft under the Microsoft Privacy Statement. TypeCount only asks Windows whether it is bought or on trial; it never sees your payment details.

Sharing

TypeCount does not sell, share, rent or disclose your data to anyone. The publisher never receives it.

Your controls

  • See it: the Dashboard shows everything TypeCount has recorded.
  • Export it: Dashboard → Privacy & Data → Export CSV + JSON.
  • Delete it: Dashboard → Privacy & Data → Delete all statistics, at any time; or uninstall the app to remove everything.
  • Pause it: pause counting from the tray icon whenever you like.
  • Start-up: switch “Start with Windows” off in Settings, or in Windows Settings → Apps → Startup.

Security

Your data never leaves your PC, so it is protected by your Windows account and your device’s own security (for example BitLocker, if you use it). TypeCount stores no passwords or payment information.

Children

TypeCount collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new effective date. A change that would reduce your privacy would be announced in the app first.
