Privacy, in detail

Is a keystroke counter a keylogger?

No. A keylogger records which keys you press, in order, so the text can be rebuilt, passwords included. A keystroke counter only adds one to a number. TypeCount keeps three tables of numbers on your PC: totals per day, per hour and per typing session. None has a column for a key or a word.

What does each one record?

A typical keylogger against TypeCount
WhatA keyloggerTypeCount
Which key you pressedYes, every oneNo. It is discarded the moment the press is sorted
The order of your keysYes, so the text can be rebuiltNo
PasswordsYes, as typedNo. A password is counted like any other typing

The file, table by table

What does TypeCount actually store?

One SQLite file, typecount.db, with three tables of numbers and one of housekeeping. This is every column, copied from the app’s own code.

days

One row per calendar day.

day
the local date, like 2026-09-28
keystrokes
how many keys went down that day (Shift, Ctrl, Alt, the Windows key and the lock keys are never counted, so Ctrl+C counts as one)
characters
how many of those were letters, digits, punctuation or space
active_seconds
how long you were actively typing
session_count
how many typing sessions started

hours

One row per hour that had any typing.

day
the local date
hour
0 to 23
keystrokes
how many keys went down in that hour

sessions

One row per stretch of typing. A session ends after five minutes with no key.

id
a running number
start_utc
when it started
end_utc
when it ended
keystrokes
how many keys in it
characters
how many letters, digits, punctuation or spaces in it
open
whether it is still going

meta

The file's own housekeeping.

key
a setting name, like schema_version or created_at_utc
value
its value

Your settings (widget size and position, preferences and, if you entered one, a beta licence key) sit beside it in settings.json, and a small diagnostic log of the app’s own events (started, paused, errors) in a logs folder. Neither holds a key or a word.

In plain words

What is kept, and what never is?

Kept, on your PC

  • How many keys you pressed and characters you typed, per hour and per day
  • How long you were actively typing, and when each session started and ended
  • Your settings: widget position, size and preferences

Never

  • Never: which keys you pressed
  • Never: your words
  • Never: your passwords
  • Never: which app you were in
  • Never: window titles
  • Never: your name, email or account
  • No account
  • No cloud
  • No ads
  • No analytics
  • No network connections

Windows does not let an ordinary app see typing into apps running as administrator, the lock screen or Windows security prompts, so TypeCount does not count those presses at all.

Check it yourself

How to open the file yourself

  1. Find the folder. TypeCount’s code puts the file at %LOCALAPPDATA%\TypeCount\typecount.db. On a Microsoft Store install, Windows may keep new app data in the app’s own private storage instead: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\SudarshanBohra.TypeCount-TypingStats_gncsd3b3ddngw\LocalCache\Local\TypeCount\typecount.db. If the first folder is not there, look in the second. The Privacy & Data view in the dashboard has an Open data folder button.
  2. Copy it. Copy typecount.db (and typecount.db-wal beside it, if there is one) to another folder, so you read a copy while TypeCount keeps counting.
  3. Open the copy. Use a free SQLite viewer such as DB Browser for SQLite and browse the four tables above. Or skip all this and press Export CSV + JSON in the same view.

Questions about being tracked

How do you tell if your keystrokes are being tracked?

There is no single switch to check, but a few general steps help. Look through Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps, and Settings → Apps → Startup, for anything you don’t recognise. Run a full scan with Windows Security’s virus and threat protection. On a PC your employer or school manages, ask them what monitoring software they run.

Can you view keystroke history on Windows?

Windows does not show you a log of the keys you pressed. A keystroke counter gives you a history of how many: TypeCount shows totals per hour, per day and per session, and a six-month calendar, never which keys.

Does TypeCount connect to the internet?

No. TypeCount makes no network connections: no account, no cloud, no analytics. Updates and the purchase go through the Microsoft Store. The privacy policy has the details.

Count every keystroke. Never a word.
